Aretha Franklin made an amazing point, it’s silly for ourselves to even consider being artists if we’re not confident in our craft. Confidence is the key to success, we cannot be brave without being confident first, so as we remember Aretha, we must also remember that to build up confidence, we need to do our fair share of the scary stuff.

It’s fascinating to think about everyone who ever thought about taking a big risk, but instead deciding against it because they were terrified that failure was the likely outcome. The reality is — the few — that do against all odds take the big risk, are not risking failure, but are opening up to the opportunity of learning. Nothing beats learning on your own skin, no book or classroom in the world can teach that.

I guess the point is to follow our damn dreams, but no matter how cliché this sounds we need to see the possible failure or success as a necessary result of the risks we must take in an effort to improve ourselves. In the end we gave it our all, because there is nothing worse than a bunch of fucking “what ifs”.

But that’s because it goes against everything we may feel we need to do in order to succeed. In the end, it’s not how many times we’re right, but how many times we’re right when it counts, and being right when it counts is something we develop when we learn on our failures.

Sure, one would argue that a person talented enough shouldn’t fail (get right hooked!), but the reality is no matter how good we may be, we will eventually go through a rough patch and be forced to deal with that reality. It’s better to be prepared, and have that resilience than feel like we are invulnerable and then face the full force of that situation.
